Yes, and they have.
These will have many uses, but I don't believe they'd be ideal for robotics.
In my opinion, heat isn't the best option as an energy source.
For one thing, when muscles expand and contract they generate their own heat, which would make precision control more difficult.
Ultimately, I think we'll mimic nature's method of using electrical impulses.
