Can 3D printed parts be made with self reinforced printed parts?

May 2, 2018
Source:
American Chemical Society
Summary:
Robots that can build homes, marathoners' running shoes and NASA's upcoming spacecraft all have one thing in common: 3-D printed parts. But as enthusiasm for 3-D printing continues to grow and expand across markets, the objects printed by the process can have weaknesses. Now, one group reports that using a simple modification to the manufacture of the starting materials improves the toughness of these printable plastics.

I hadn't heard this "weakness" addressed before, but I suspected it existed.
It kind of reminds me of "pot metal".
It's metal, but not nearly as strong as solid metal.
They often use it for chromed parts, like bathroom fittings.
I'm glad they're finding a way to fix the problem.
Products have been losing durability in our throw -away culture.
It seems like it all started with Bic pens and lighters.

That trend is hurting America.
American products were always expensive, but they were quality products, so they were coveted all over the World.
That's changed. The short cuts to profits business model destroyed that reputation.
We were never able to compete price wise. Quality was our edge.
