I favor the more realistic SciFi too. The less bang bang shoot'em up, the better.
Some of my favorites are "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (the original) - "The Thing" (the original) - "Forbidden Planet" - "The Time Machine" (the original) - "Contact" - "The Andromeda Strain".
While I think first contact with intelligent extraterrestrials will be very dramatic and world shaking, I don't think it will be violent.
Aliens from our universe would have evolved under the same rules of cause and effect. So, they would have learned, as we are slowly learning, that aggression doesn't work. It's self defeating.
The threat, I believe, is in contamination.
That would include culture, technology, and pathogens.
Of course there will be those that declare them evil. As a result, if violence erupts, it'll come from us.
I suspect they would be capable of anticipating and neutralizing that threat before anything really bad happens.
Even if people want to believe they would be capable of aggression, there's nothing here for them.
If they can get here, their technology is much more advanced. So they don't need ours. As for natural resources, once again if they can get here, there are trillions of other planets out there that aren't inhabited by intelligent life from which they could extract what they need without any trouble.
The only thing we could possibly have that's worth taking is DNA. Human, or animal. Earth's DNA would likely be fairly unique.
In short, I don't see any hostile alien takeovers in our future. It'd be like robbing some poor mentally ill homeless guy for his collection of pebbles and bottle caps.
